Create and schedule a sale

Set up a promotion, choose its products and schedule, and check how prices will restore.

Use a sale when prices should return to their recorded pre-sale values after a promotion. This example discounts one collection by 20%. For a permanent change, use a task instead.

Creating a sale changes real Shopify prices. Test a small selection and check its Details and storefront prices before applying the promotion to a large collection.

Choose the prices and products

  1. Open Sales and click Create sale.

  2. Enter a Title so you can identify the promotion. Customers do not see this title.

  3. Choose Product prices to change your base product prices. For fixed country prices, follow the Shopify Markets guide.

  4. Under Price, choose Decrease price, select By percent, and enter 20.

  5. Under Compare at price, choose Set to old price (discount) if you want the pre-sale selling price shown as the crossed-out price. Your theme controls how that appears.

  6. Check the rounding for both fields. Use No rounding unless you want an additional price-ending adjustment.

  7. Under Apply to, choose Selected collections and select the intended collection.

  8. Review Exclude and Exclude discounted before creating the sale.

A collection selects products and their eligible variants. For only particular sizes or colors, use Selected products with variants. Check whether another active sale already covers those variants.

Set the schedule

Start and end scheduling require Basic or higher. On Free, you can start a sale now, then Disable it manually when the promotion ends. Free cannot schedule a future start or automatic end.

On Basic or higher, choose the Start date and Start time under Schedule. Enable Set end date and enter the end date and time for automatic restoration. Without an end date, the sale continues until you Disable it. The end must be at least 10 minutes after the start.

Times use your Shopify store's timezone, not your computer's timezone. Check the displayed dates and times before creating the sale.

Recurring schedules are not supported. Create each weekend's promotion separately rather than expecting one schedule to repeat.

Create and check the sale

Click Create once the selection, prices and schedule are correct. Allow time for preparation and price updates.

Open Details and verify an affected product in Shopify and your storefront. If the storefront country uses fixed market prices, a base-product sale might not change the price shown there.

At the end time, the sale restores its recorded pre-sale prices. Later manual edits or overlapping tasks can affect the intended result, so review them before ending a sale early. Follow restore prices after a task or sale for Cancel, Disable and restoration steps.

For products added after the sale starts, use the manual check or Premium condition tracking guide.

For optional setup, see sale tags and discount codes during a sale.

If the form reports an existing or overlapping sale, follow resolve a blocked task or sale before creating another promotion.
