On Basic or higher, a sale can add or remove Shopify product tags while it is active. This can help you organize a promotion or populate a Shopify smart collection. Tags do not create a discount or choose the sale's products by themselves.
Set the tags when creating the sale
Open Sales and click Create sale.
Set the prices, schedule and intended products under Apply to.
Under Advanced, enable Add tags while sale is active or Remove tags while sale is active.
Enter the tags in Tags to add or Tags to remove.
Review the full sale and click Create.
Use a dedicated tag for the promotion, such as summer-sale-2026, rather than a permanent merchandising tag. When the sale restores, its add-tag action is reversed by removing that tag; a tag that already existed is not protected merely because it predated the sale. Tags configured for removal are added back on restoration.
These tag controls are available when creating the sale, not on the edit form afterward. If you need a replacement sale, check later manual price edits and overlapping tasks or sales, then disable and wait for restoration before duplicating and creating the replacement. Review the copied tags and schedule.
Build a sale collection
In Shopify, create a smart collection with a tag condition matching the dedicated tag. Check its product membership after the sale applies the tag. Follow Shopify's collection conditions guide for the current collection controls.
Choose the sale's products using an existing source collection, explicit products or another stable selection. Do not make a new sale depend only on the empty collection that its own tag is supposed to populate.
Adding a tag does not add new products to a running sale. Use Check changes or Premium condition tracking for new matching products.
Tags apply to whole products
Tags belong to the product, not an individual variant or market. Tagging a sale that changes only one size still tags the whole product. Tags added for a market sale also affect product organization in other markets; they do not create a country-only sale collection.
The app adds or removes tags as the sale is applied and reverses those actions as prices restore, including when you disable the sale. Allow processing and Shopify collection updates to finish before checking membership. If the expected tags are still wrong afterward, contact support with the sale title, one product and the tag involved.
