Use a task on Product prices to change Shopify's Cost per item in bulk. Cost editing requires Advanced or Premium. Cost is the amount you record for a variant, not the price a customer pays.
Create a cost-only task
Open Tasks and click Create task.
Select Product prices under Change type.
Under Price, select Don't change price and No rounding.
Under Compare at price, select Don't change compare at price and No rounding.
Under Cost per item, choose the action for your goal from the table below.
Enter the percentage or amount if the action needs one. Amounts use your store currency.
For an increase or decrease, select No rounding unless you want to adjust the resulting costs to a whole number or ending.
Select the intended products under Apply to and review Exclude and Exclude discounted. Use Selected products with variants if only certain variants should change.
Click Create when ready to apply the changes.
Goal | Cost per item settings |
|---|---|
Raise existing costs by 10% | Increase cost per item, By percent, |
Reduce existing costs by 2 currency units | Decrease cost per item, By amount, |
Give every selected variant the same cost | Set new cost per item, then enter the Amount |
Clear the recorded cost | Reset cost per item |
For example, increasing a cost of 20 by 10% gives 22. The selling price and compare-at price stay unchanged when their actions and rounding are set as described above. Leaving an action unchanged alone does not protect a field from rounding.
Creating the task applies real changes. Start with a small live test, then check the old and new values in Details.
Missing costs and resets
An increase or decrease needs an existing cost. It cannot fill in a blank cost. Use Set new cost per item with a positive amount to fill missing costs, selecting only the variants that should receive that same amount.
Reset cost per item clears the field. It does not set the cost to zero or recover an earlier cost. To undo a cost task, use its recorded rollback, after checking later edits and overlapping work.
Changing cost does not automatically recalculate selling prices. To set selling prices from cost, follow margin or markup pricing. Cost editing is unavailable in sales and Market prices mode.
