Review product margins and export a report

Generate a margin report, understand missing costs and export the results as CSV.

Use the margin report to review selling price, cost and gross margin for each product variant. Generating or exporting a report does not change prices.

Generate the report

  1. Open Tools.

  2. Under View products margin, click Generate report.

  3. Wait for the report to finish.

  4. Search by product, variant or SKU, or use Margin to select All, With margin or Without margin.

  5. Click Export CSV to download the report.

The report reads product prices and costs in your store currency. It includes active and draft products and excludes archived products. It is not a report of fixed prices for each Shopify Market.

A report is a snapshot. Generate a new one after changing prices or costs if you need updated figures.

Understand the margin

Margin is the difference between price and cost as a share of the selling price:

Margin % = (price - cost) ÷ price × 100

If cost is missing, or the selling price is zero, the report cannot calculate a margin. The variant can still appear with N/A. A recorded cost of zero is different from a missing cost and can produce a 100% margin for a positive selling price.

A variant selling for 40 with a cost of 20 has a 50% margin. Margin can be negative when cost is higher than price. These figures use Shopify's cost per item; they do not include shipping, payment fees or other business expenses.

The report's calculation does not mean that a task can calculate a target margin from a zero cost. For changing prices, see set prices from cost using margin or markup.

Keep a CSV copy

The CSV includes Product, Variant, SKU, Price, Compare at price, Cost and Margin %.

Export CSV exports the whole report, not just the current search results, filter or page. Download the full report and filter it in your spreadsheet if you need a subset.

If your search or filter returns no rows, the export button may be hidden. Clear the search or choose All to show rows again, then export the report.

Reports are temporary and are cleaned up after about a day. Download a copy while it is available, or generate a new report if the old link no longer works.

If the page says Report generation failed, return to Tools and generate a new report. If it fails again, contact support with the report type and the message shown. Do not treat a failed report as a complete catalog export.

Bulk Price Editor does not import an edited CSV to change prices. Use a task for supported price adjustments.
